Everyday Red Gems (Under $20)
NV Clautiere "2 Cocky Sisters" Red Blend
Paso Robles, California
$13.99
A big, whopping kitchen sink blend of 46% Counoise, 22% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 4% Viognier, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petite Verdot, this juicy beast has upfront black cherry, red raspberry and spiced plum with beautifully accented tannins that round out the finish. Excellent inexpensive middle of the week red. But we won't stop you from drinking it on the weekends too!
2008 Bibbiani Chianti "Poggio Vignoso"
Tuscany, Italy
$12.99
For 13 centuries this producer has been making wine on the sunny southern slopes of their estate where only 10% of the total 1,000 acre Tuscan estate is dedicated to vines. The "Poggio Vignoso" ("Vignoso Hill") bottling is 85% Sangiovese with traditional amounts of Canaiolo and Malvasia blended in, and only 2,800 cases made. Medium-bodied, on the dry side with the firm sort of acidity the best Chianti wines are known for, you'll find flavors of dried cherries, pressed flowers and peppery spiciness. The level of fruit is great enough to allow for pleasure on its own but its true strengths are in accompanying red sauce pasta dishes, breaded pork chops or roasted herb chicken. Tradition lives here.
2008 Bernard Baudry Chinon "Les Granges" Cabernet Franc
Loire, France
$18.99
Bernard Baudry is one of the newer stars of the Chinon scene, where red wines are made from the Cabernet Franc grape. A graduate of the Lycée de Beaune, Baudry created his 25-hectare estate out of family parcels and purchased land. He quickly rose to prominence in the appellation for precise, textured Chinon. Baudry is now assisted by his son Matthieu. The first release of the vintage and most youthful wine is the Les Granges. This is from young vines (10-15 years old) planted on alluvial soil and gravel near the riverbed. This is a wine that is supple and fruity with smoky cherry fruit and is meant to drink young. It is a perfect wine for simple foods and cheeses.
2009 Bernard Baudry "Chinon Rosé" Cabernet Franc
Loire, France
$16.99
Also from Domaine Baudry comes their rosé wine, 100% Cabernet Franc as well. Made with skin contact rather than a saignée bleeding of the grapes and with no malolactic fermentation. It has a very light salmon pink rosé hue. A delicate nose, floral, light peach fruit with a touch of cream. A vibrant palate, fresh but also forceful, with lots of spicy acidity. Dry with great character, the perfect rosé for dry wine lovers!
2007 Huntington Petite Sirah
California
$11.99
Deep and inky in color, scents of cherry and plum are immediately identifiable and lead straight to decadent fullness in the mouth without sacrificing vibrancy and liveliness. Great typical Petite Sirah flavors while light enough on its feet for summertime sipping. We're lucky we found this one!
2007 Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Abruzzi, Italy
$15.99
This wine from the Montepulciano grape displays an intense violet color as well as aromas of plums and ripe blackberry. Each sip delivers a mouthful of ripe berries, leather and black pepper with subtle hints of oregano, dried herbs, and a touch of vanilla; all leading to a dry, supple finish. Great with assertive, full-flavored "country style" cooking such as ossobuco, roast leg of lamb, spaghetti puttanesca, or pasta with sausage, pepper and onions.
2007 Eguren Tempranillo "Codice"
Vino de La Tierra de Castilla, Spain
$11.99
"The purple-colored 2007 Codice Tinto is 100% Tempranillo aged for six months in tank and six months in French and American barriques. The nose gives up a hint of mineral, spice box, and black cherry leading to an easy-going, smooth, spicy wine with good balance and medium length. Drink it over the next three years." - The Wine Advocate, June 2009, 87 points
NV Le Lapin "Multiplicity" Red Wine
Paso Robles, California
$11.99
Le Lapin is the French word for rabbit. It is also the name of Rabbit Ridge's new line of wine produced from grapes grown exclusively in Paso Robles. All of the Le Lapin wines are non-vintage, which means two or more vintages can be used to make the wine. This
allows the winery to blend a newer vintage wine for freshness with an older vintage for complexity or to make the wine more drinkable. The "Multiplicity" blend is made from Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah. Plump, juicy red full of black cherry, blackberry, a touch of riper plum with spice notes. Just a simple everyday value wine!
2008 Iché "Les Hérétiques" Carignan-Syrah Blend
Languedoc, France
$11.99
This special cuvée is a blend of Carignan from 70-year-old vines and Syrah. A complex and firm red, Les Hérétiques is bursting with ripe berry flavor. The tannins are well-balanced and the finish long. And at such a reasonable price it is a perennial popular choice! Benefits from some breathing or a decanting too!
2008 Charles Smith Merlot "The Velvet Devil"
Columbia Valley, Washington
$15.99
Charles Smith was named Food & Wine Magazine's 2009 Winemaker of The Year and this Merlot will show you why! From the winery website, "If velvet had a flavor this would be it. Bittersweet chocolate, dark Italian cherries. Sweet rose petals with a firm, satiny finish. Pure Washington Merlot. HELL YEAH!"
2009 Michlits "Frizzante Rosé"
Burgenland, Austria
$15.99
The fizz is in! A few bubbles always makes a wine taste better, especially this rosé of Pinot Noir! 100% organic, biodynamic rosé from Austria, markedly less carbonated than, say, Champagne, with a floral bouquet of white flowers and hibiscus and a palate impression that is very dry but also fruity, with wild strawberries and herbs. A very refreshing summer quaffer that will get you hooked!
2009 Domaine de La Janasse "Cotes du Rhone Rosé"
Rhone, France
$16.99
Our first new rosé of the spring season! Made primarily from Grenache and Syrah with a splash of Cinsault, Janasse's rose is always full of fruit, juicy and fresh. Has very good weight and length compared to other rosé wines while keeping the pretty raspberry, red cherry, strawberry fruit flavors one comes to expect. Toast the warmer weather with a bottle well-chilled!
2007 Montebuena Rioja
Rioja, Spain
$12.99
Produced from 100% Tempranillo grapes, which are hand harvested from the Montebuena vineyard. Brilliant deep ruby red color, fruity aromas. Montebuena Red has a spicy vanilla bouquet and is smooth and fruity in the mouth with some well-integrated secondary nuances, full-flavored and a persistent pleasant finish! 88 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate...
2007 Domaine St. George Cabernet Sauvignon "Barrel Reserve"
Sonoma County, California
$15.99
The winery's "Barrel Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a light and skillful touch: it shows a complex varietal fruitiness without being blatant or heavy. It offers flavors of cherries and chocolate accented with hints of spice and pepper. Barrel Reserve has a round, smooth finish and is an excellent companion to richly flavored foods. Excellent value wine!
Everyday White Gems (Under $20)
2009 Fontanavecchia Falanghina "Taburno"
Campania, Italy
$16.99
Made from 100% of the Falanghina grape from the Taburno sub-region of Campania, this wine presents typical sweet baking spices alongside minerally driven citrus and an unusual blend of fragrant berry, pomegranate, apple, plum and pear fruit. Pleasantly dry, at times theer are suggestions of dried almonds. Falanghina is one of Campania's most popular everyday wines and you'll be smitten with your first sip!
2009 Banyan Gewurztraminer
Monterey County, California
$12.99
It's quite rare to find balance and quality in a Gewurztraminer of this price so we're all over this wine! The grapes come from an old vine block in Northern Monterey County where wind, fog and cool temperatures allow for a controlled, specific ripeness. Peach, apricot, cloves and tea leaves make for a very aromatic wine. Made in an off-dry style, there's some residual sugar to draw out the litchee nut notes typical of the grape. A perfect sipper and accompaniment to spicy cuisine.
NV Trevisiol Prosecco "Valdobbiadene Extra Dry"
Veneto, Italy
$14.99
This sparkling Prosecco was a standout at a recent trade tasting (along with a great Chianti) and we've made some space for it on our retail shelves! The Trevisiol Estate was among the first to make sparkling Prosecco in the area of Valdobbiadene, a highly respected "grand cru" of the broader Veneto appellation. The "Extra Dry" bottling is smooth and fruity with fine, delicate bubbles. Its fragrant elegance makes it perfect as an aperitif or served at brunch. Prosecco lovers have to pick some up!
2006 Hahn Chardonnay "SLH"
Santa Lucia Highlands, California
$19.99
Estate-grown, produced and bottled by Hahn Winery, their SLH wines reflect the best from their vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. This golden-hued Chardonnay shows a nose of tree fruit, pears, and golden delicious apples as well as a refined oak toastiness.
2009 Aveleda "Fonte" Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde, Portugal
$10.99
The wines from the Vinho Verde region are among the quintessential summer wines. They retain a slight fizziness which complements their lighter body and dry nature. Aveleda's version has a pale yellow-green color and an emphasis on citrus in the mouth and fresh peach, apricot fruit, a perfect poolside sipper. Its lower alcohol also helps when you're out in the sun! Drop a bottle in a bucket of ice and then watch it disappear! A blend of the local Trajadura, Loureiro, Arinto, and Azal grapes.
2008 Jean-Paul Brun "Beaujolais Blanc" Chardonnay
Beaujolais, France
$17.99
Few people realize that white wine is grown in Beaujolais! Jean-Paul Brun knows as he produces some of the most exceptional Chardonnay in the region. In the early 1990s, he planted 3 hectares of Chardonnay on limestone soil. He has since expanded the production of his well known and sought-after Beaujolais Blanc by contracting grapes from a small number of nearby vignerons. The clay-limestone soil that the Chardonnay grows on is perfect for the grape. The climate, which is a little warmer than the Côte d'Or enables Jean-Paul to produce a rich wine with lots of character. It is bottled completely unoaked. When young, the wine has a very fruity bouquet that becomes more honeyed as the wine matures. A rare find!
2009 Ameztoi Hondarribi Zuri
Getariarko Txakolina, Spain
$19.99
Ameztoi Txakolina is one of the top producers of Getariako Txakolina, located in Spain's Basque country. The winery owns 20 hectares of vines in the best location. From the vineyards one can see the influence of the Atlantic Ocean on this vineyard site. Ignacio Ameztoi is the seventh generation to carry on the tradition of making Txakolina in the province of Getaria. Made from the indigenous grape variety of Hondarribi Zuri and its red companion Hondarribi Beltza, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and bottled with residual carbonic that gives the wine its natural spritz. Its dry, crisp lemon/lime flavors and green apple, pear fruit flavors make it an ideal accompaniment to shellfish. Superb summer wine.
2009 Fritz Ritter Riesling "Maestro"
Pfalz, Germany
$12.99
The Fritz Zimmer Riesling is produced with precision, artistry and balance, an exceptional achievement for the price. It is slightly sweet with aromas and flavors of peaches and pears with sweet citrus overtones. This wine is very similar to the beloved, but discontinued, "Bunny" Riesling. If you want it "sweet" but not "too" sweet give this one a try!
2009 Layer Cake "Virgin" Chardonnay
Central Coast, California
$14.99
This is the latest release from the well-known Layer Cake stable of wines. Winemaker Jayson Woodbridge says: "My vision for this wine was to take what I think are the best characteristics of three great white varietals, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio, and stylistically bring them together in a 100 percent Chardonnay from California's Central Coast. To do so, there can't be any oak involved. Like me, I think a lot of wine drinkers are tired of the over-oaked Chardonnays that hide the floral and citrus characteristics and subtle varietal aromatics that a true Chardonnay should have. I called it Virgin Chardonnay because it never has any contact with oak."
2009 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet
Loire, France
$14.99
Muscadet is the quintessential summer white wine, dry, zippy and perfect for sipping or served with most seafood or shellfish. Proprietor Marc Ollivier is perhaps the finest winemaker of Muscadet today, all the grapes are hand harvested, fermented with natural yeasts and given extended contact with the lees to bring out additional crispness. Chalky, lemony with plenty of zing in the apple, peach, apricot fruit, you have got to try some!
2009 Chasing Venus Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough, New Zealand
$14.99

The wines are being made under the supervision of winemaker Dan Cederquist and are made in the aggressive pungent grapefruit, gooseberry style that has made New Zealand world famous!
Top Drawer Juice ($20 and Up)
2007 Hahn Pinot Noir "SLH Estate"
Santa Lucia Highlands, California

This ruby-hued Pinot Noir beckons from the glass with fragrant aromas of violet, black cherry and oak. Notes of pepper and strawberry jam lead to a luscious core of ripe red berries. Hints of earthiness, citrus and vanilla add to the complexity, and a silky, sleek finish makes this wine a true palate-pleaser. Offers superb value at its price point.
2007 Klinker Brick Zinfandel "Old Vine"
Lodi, California
$20.99
With an average age of the vines at 85 years and yields below 3 tons per acre, this wine has aromas of fresh blackberry, raspberry, pepper and cedar. Showing exceptional balance on the palate, there are rich flavors of berry pie with a long, lingering finish. There's a lot packed into this bottle and another example of quality Zinfandel from the Lodi appellation. One sip will convert you!
2007 Runquist Zinfandel "Massoni Ranch"
Amador County, California
$29.99
One of the deepest color in years with hues of purple-carmine. The aroma is deep and brooding with ripe concentrated black fruits, cassis with a bit of perfumed lavender. The bouquet is that of smoky oak, chocolate with hints of pie crust. Big ripe black raspberry and plum flavors dominate along with nuances of mocha and dark chocolate. Despite the density of color and depth of flavor the tannins remain restrained and the texture of the wine is supple and voluptuous. Over the top Zin, we can't wait for the new shipment of Runquist Petite Sirah either!
2008 R Wines Shiraz "Southern Belle"
McLaren Vale, Australia
$21.99
With this new Shiraz, importer Dan Philips convinced a cadre of winemakers to age some of their most promising juice in used whiskey barrels, sourced from Julian Van Winkle, proprietor of the Pappy Van Winkle Distillery in Kentucky. (Before those charred oak barrels held wine for eighteen months, whiskey slept in that same wood for twenty years.) It is a heady, fruit-driven bomb of a wine, with a nose full of vanilla and a spine cobbled out of post oak. This wine that defies the dictates of terroir and tradition and begs for a rack of ribs. If you love explosive Shiraz fruit, the whiskey barrels puts this one over the top!
2009 O'Reilly's Pinot Noir
Oregon
$23.99
O'Reilly's Pinot Noir is the flagship of the "good value" label of Owen Roe Winery. The O'Reilly's 2009 Pinot Noir opens with a lovely nose of dried lavender, and candied red fruit, with a hint of earth and pine. 2006 Burgess Merlot
Napa Valley, California
$22.99

2007 Copain Syrah "Tous Ensemble"
Mendocino County, California
$28.99
Copain is one of the stars of contemporary Californian winemaking, specializing in Syrah and Pinot Noir and garnering high accolades from a host of wine critics. Their Mendocino County Syrah is a very classy wine, of which winemaker Wells Guthrie notes, "Great complexity on the nose and palate with black currant, black raspberry, pepper, dark chocolate and subtle smokey notes that are all well integrated. Medium bodied with well balanced flavors, supple chalky tannins, good structure and long finish. Ready to drink now, but another year in bottle will help meld the flavors even more. A quick decant should help for short term drinking and this Syrah should be good over the next 5 years."
2007 Quivira Zinfandel
Dry Creek Valley, California
$22.99
The 2007 vintage will likely be held up as a benchmark for producing wines of unusual elegance and focus. A cool and even summer let the fruit fully ripen while retaining beautifully balanced acidity. Plums are a common description of Zinfandel; in this vintage they are reminiscent of the small wild plums that dot the Sonoma County roadsides as opposed to the sweeter black supermarket variety. The classic briar patch notes are there on the nose, but the palate is much more elegant than you would expect. Capable of dancing with not only BBQ and burgers, but with your most ambitious culinary creations!
2007 Tin Barn Zinfandel
Russian River Valley, California
$24.99
Tin Barn's Russian River Zinfandel is sourced from the Gilsson Vineyard near the town of Windsor in Sonoma County. The 2007 once again shows the consistency of the fruit from this vineyard, displaying forward raspberry fruit as in earlier vintages. A big wine with a deep purple/red color and a long, seductive finish on the palate highlighted by hints of vanilla and toast from the new American oak barrels. Double Gold winner at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2010!
2007 Raymond Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge "Cuvee Girard"
Rhone, France
$47.99

With plenty of Provencal herb, lavender, smoke, meat juice, black cherry, and black currant characteristics, this rich, pure, sultry, opulent wine should drink well for 10-15 years." 2007 is considered out of the best vintages in the Southern Rhone in many years!
2006 Chateau Les Barraillots
Margaux, Bordeaux, France
$26.99
A great find, imported by the small boutigue importer Wine Traditions based in Virginia, the 2006 Chateau Les Barraillots displays all the tell-tale grace and suppleness the Margaux region in Bordeaux is known for. The vineyards span seven hectares of an average vine age of 40 years. Typically, 50% of the final blend is Cabernet Sauvignon with approximately 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Fresh and fruity, the tannins are finely grained and fit its overall lack of ostentation. Black currant and cherry fruits predominate along with accents of cedar and light minerally earthiness. A forward drinker best consumed now and over the next 2-3 years. Fantastic price for Margaux wine!

2008 Orin Swift "The Prisoner"
California
